This is the board to start on and the board to come back to. Two hundred pegs is twenty minutes of beading, which means you find out whether a design reads before you have spent an evening on it — and it is small enough that a mistake costs a minute rather than an hour.
At 7 cm it is also the only size that works as an object you carry: keyrings, zip pulls, bag charms, fridge magnets. Anything bigger swings about and catches on things. Iron both sides properly, because these are the pieces that actually get handled.
The constraint is real, though. Two hundred pegs will not hold a face or a detailed animal: at this size a subject is a silhouette plus two or three internal details, and designs drawn for the bigger boards do not shrink onto it. The patterns below are drawn for this board specifically.

Each of these fills the board edge to edge: nothing to resize, and no leftover border to work out what to do with.
