Starting out with fuse beads: what to buy

One square board, a tub of mixed midi beads, baking paper and an iron. Everything else can wait.

The shopping list is shorter than the shop would like. One square 29×29 pegboard, a tub of mixed midi beads, a sheet of baking paper, and an iron you already own. That is a complete setup, and it will make several hundred pictures.

Buy mixed beads before you buy single colours. A mixed tub tells you which colours you actually reach for, and after two or three projects you will know exactly which three you have run out of — that is the moment to buy singles, not before.

Tweezers are the one accessory that earns its place, and even then only for the last few beads in a tight corner. Everything else on the accessory wall — bead scoops, sorting trays, special irons — is solving a problem you do not have yet.

Start on the small board, even if it feels like the beginner option. Twenty minutes to a finished thing teaches you more than three hours to an unfinished one, and it is how you find out whether the picture you picked reads at all before you have invested an evening in it.

Sort as you go rather than before you start. Pour a small pile of the colour you are on, place it, then swap — sorting an entire tub into compartments is an hour of work that makes the beading itself no faster.

Work colour by colour, not row by row. Place all the black, then all the white, then the next: your hand learns the shape, you stop rechecking the pattern for every single peg, and mistakes become obvious while they are still easy to lift out.

Expect to knock the board at least once. When it happens, do not tip it upright to see the damage — lay it flat, and lift the loose beads off before they roll into the pegs that are still filled. A board that has been fully beaded but not yet ironed is the most fragile thing in the room.

The first three pieces will be worse than you want them to be, and this is a hand skill rather than a talent. The fourth is where the iron timing clicks, and after that the limiting factor stops being technique and becomes which picture you chose.
